The cashier at a Maryland Costco store says she has received a barrage of calls since President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that threatens to shut down the nation’s financial system.
But one customer is taking it to the next level.
The customer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect his family, said the Costco employee who helped him process his order made the point that “we just want to have the government of the United States out of your life.”
The employee told The Washington Post that he believes the executive order, which the White House has called a “nuclear option,” will shut down financial institutions and “the economy.”
The executive order is meant to protect Americans from financial collapse.
It’s also meant to stop the government from shutting down its social security, Medicare and Medicaid programs.
The order says that Congress can suspend payments to any government agency that performs a major security breach, but it does not explicitly give the government the authority to shut the economy down.
In the meantime, the order says the government can “terminate the licenses of any financial institution that performs an unauthorized or unauthorized act” and imposes fines and other penalties.
The employee said he was surprised by the call from the customer, whom he did not name.
But the employee said the customer told him the orders had been piling up for several days and he didn’t think he would have gotten through them on his own.
The store is located on the Eastern Shore, about 40 miles northwest of Baltimore.
A Costco spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
